How to Buy a Car Out of State: A Simple Checklist

Many of our customers buy their next car without visiting the showroom first. It works well when you follow a few simple steps.

1. Ask for a detailed walkaround

Request recent photos and a video of the car in daylight, a cold start and a short drive. A good seller sends them without hesitation.

2. Check the history and the paperwork

Compare the VIN on the title, the vehicle history report and the car itself. Ask about service records, open recalls and the number of keys.

3. Get an independent inspection

A pre-purchase inspection by a local shop costs little and tells you more than any listing. Schedule it before you send a deposit.

4. Agree on delivery and registration

Decide who arranges transport and when ownership passes. Registration and taxes are paid in your home state, so check the local rules in advance.
